US Government Shutdown: Barack Obama Accuses Republicans of 'Extortion'

Barack Obama has warned opposition politicians to stop using “threats and extortion” over the ongoing US government shutdown.

The president, addressing a news conference, said the American people don’t request a ransom for doing their jobs, so neither should Republicans.

The US government closed down on October 1, when Congress was incapable to agree a budget. Republicans, who control the House of Representatives, refused to agree the budget, claiming they would only do so in exchange for concessions over Obama’s controversial healthcare reform law.

Obama now says he is willing to talk about any issues once Congress has voted to re-open government and raise the debt ceiling. He said: “I will sit down and work with anyone of any party not only to talk about the budget, I’ll talk about ways to progress the healthcare system.”

He added that ordinary Americans would suffer if the debt ceiling wasn’t raised and the country defaulted. Obama said: “A decision to actually go through with it, to actually permit default according to many CEOs and economists would be and I’m quoting here ‘insane catastrophic chaos’ , these are some of the more polite words. Warren Buffet likened default to a nuclear bomb.

“We can’t make extortion routine as part of our democracy. Democracy doesn’t function this way. And this is not just for me. It’s also for my successors in office, whatever party they’re from.”

Obama said that if Congress refused to raise the debt ceiling, America would not be able to meet its financial requirements for the first time in 225 years.

The US has until October 17 to raise its borrowing limit before it risks defaulting.

Shocking New Evidence - Jiah Khan Murdered Not Suicide

Rabiya Amin, mother of late actress Jiah Khan, has circulated some photos of her daughter post death to convey that she was murdered.

The aggrieved mother recently filed a petition in Bombay High Court insisting for a proper investigation in her daughter's death. She suspected that Jiah had been murdered and not committed suicide as believed.

On Friday, Rabiya took to Twitter and published some grim images of her daughter's body. The images give a closer look at the external injuries on Jiah's face.

"You can fool people but not God look at her expression and injuries," Rabiya said.

Other images showed Jiah wrapped in white and being prepared for her journey to the grave.

"For a mother to see her baby warped up this way is beyond words," Rabiya captioned one photo.

Jiah was originally believed to have killed herself owing to lack of work opportunities. The case took a twist when several letters in her handwriting were recovered, highlighting her abusive relationship with boyfriend Sooraj Pancholi, and son of veteran actor Aditya Pancholi.

Sooraj was arrested on charges of abetment to suicide and kept in court custody. He was granted bail three weeks later. Actor Salman Khan was dragged into the controversy when reports emerged that he had advised Sooraj to keep away from Jiah, which had led to further problems between the young couple.

On October 1, Rabiya sought for a CBI probe alleging that the investigation into her daughter’s death was abused. She submitted several photographs and shocking independent forensic reports to augment her stance that Jiah was murdered.

Jiah, better known for her work in "Nishabd", "Ghajni" and "Housefull 2", was found hanging at her Juhu residence on 3 June.

Lake Natron: Deadly Waters in Tanzania Turn Animals To Stone

Lake Natron in northern Tanzania causes any animal that becomes engrossed in the water to die and become calcified, according to an article from New Scientist Tuesday.

Nick Brandt, well-known for his photography of East Africa's natural landscape, came across Tanzania's Lake Natron during his travels.

The lake is named for a mineral (natron, often referred to as sodium carbonate decahydrate) whose presence gives Lake Natron a unusually high alkaline content. With a severe alkalinity pH that ranges from 9 to 10.5, and water temperatures that can reach 140 degrees Fahrenheit, the lake is so inhospitable that it kills most wildlife that wind up in its depths.

The lake's unique chemical composition calcifies living creatures like birds or bats, yielding faultlessly preserved specimens whose washed up bodies remain dotted along the lake's environs. According to The New Scientist, Brandt stumbled upon the calcified creatures in these very positions, collected them, and then placed their bodies on branches to create his eerie portraits.

Unless you are an alkaline tilapia (Alcolapia alcalica) – an extremophile fish adapted to the harsh conditions – it is not the best place to live. During the dry season, Lake Natron’s high pH levels are just below ammonia on the scale of caustic substances.

This makes the lake highly corrosive, and contributes to the “stoning” of so many birds and mammals that fall victim to the water. The mineral content can get so high that the water feels “thick” to the touch. Theories suggest the animals are muddled by the glassy surface of the lake and get trapped there, slowly calcifying because the water is so “heavy” they cannot escape once they come in contact with it.

The lake is fed by a river and mineral hot springs in the area, but has no outlet, so these waters have nowhere to go but up. Evaporation of the surface creates islands of exposed salt deposits in the lake, some large enough to be recorded on satellite images.

Jiah Khan Suicide Case: Mother Files Petition, Seeks CBI Inquiry

There could be a new twist in actor Jiah Khan’s death case as, in a petition filed in the Bombay High Court, Jiah’s mother Rabia is seeking that the case be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The petition filed on Tuesday alleges a “lethargic and biased approach to benefit the accused Sooraj Pancholi”.

The petition accompanied by several photographs of Jiah taken right after the incident and supported by an independent opinion from a forensic expert, points towards a case of homicidal death than a suicide as projected by the police so far.

Rabia’s petition, filed through Advocate Dinesh Tiwari, also raises fingers on the Additional Commissioner of Police Vishwas Nangre Patil — for declaring it as that of a suicide within a few hours of the incident.

Jiah Khan allegedly committed suicide on June 3 this year. Her boyfriend Sooraj was arrested for assisting her suicide a week later i.e. on June 10, but released on bail on July 2 after the HC granted him bail a day earlier.

“The petitioner has strong reasons to believe that the entire investigation has been hushed up at the behest of the police who were pre–decided to carry out the investigation in the manner so that the truth does not come out. While doing so, the matter which could have been investigated as a case of murder, has been converted into a case of suicide,” reads the petition.

It further adds that the investigation is so bad that there is hardly any possibility of getting the accused convicted. It accuses Sooraj’s father — actor Aditya Panscholi — of using his clout.

On the forensic related facts of the case, the petition lists certain points which indicate that the case may be that of hanging Jiah after killing her.

It says that there are other injury marks on Jiah’s face and body apart from the usual ligature marks which happen in every case of death due to hanging. It points towards an injury on the right side of her lips and a mark on her left arm — as if someone held her tightly.

The petition says that the ligature marks on her neck are not the way a person would get when s/he hangs him/herself from the ceiling fan, thereby pointing towards strangulation.

This contention has been backed by an independent forensic expert — Dr R N Jerajani.

Dr Jerajani’s report about the ligature marks says, “The marks are on the right side of the neck, backwards and slightly downwards, while on the left side also slightly downwards.

These imprints are not the usual marks that will be seen in the cases of hanging and possibility of strangulation is by deductive rule out.”

Jiah allegedly hanged herself using a soft muslin dupatta. Dr Jerajani’s opinion, in this regard, says that the depth of the ligature marks is difficult to achieve with soft material.

The petition says that a forensic expert from a government hospital too has given similar opinion, but he did not wish to be named.

According to the petition, Rabia Khan has preserved a blood-patch found by her in a room different from where her daughter’s body was found even till now. The petition says that despite having pointed this out to the police repeatedly, they haven’t bothered to collect it. A handle of one of the drawers in this room was also found in bent position.

The petition also points towards the difference in height between the ground and the ceiling fan — located right between two single beds. According to the petition, Jiah could not have hanged herself from the ceiling fan so high, without help from a stool — which was not there at the home at all. It says that Jiah’s cousins tried to enact the suicide seen, but failed to do so.

The petition says that Rabia informed Vishwas Manger Patil and the investigating officer of the case about whatever she found, but they failed to pay any heed. It further states that the bedroom window could have been used to gain entry into her first floor apartment, as the window is at a very low level and very close to the ledge over the building’s entry. It says that the fact that the window was found to be open despite the room’s air conditioner being on raises enough suspicion.

CCTV footage indicates that when Jiah entered the flat a few minutes before she allegedly committed suicide, she was dressed in a track suit, whereas her body was found dressed in a night suit. Would a person about to commit suicide change dress right before doing it, questions the petition.

Tiny Chihuahua Milly Crowned World’s Smallest Dog By Guinness World Record

Milly the Chihuahua has been crowned the world's smallest dog at just 3.8 inches high.

The micro mutt who lives with her Argentine owners in the north east Puerto Rican town of Vega Alta, was so small when she was born back in December 2011 she had to be nourished with an eye dropper and could fit in a teaspoon.

And regardless of being fed almost entirely on gourmet food, she failed to grow much larger than the size of an ordinary Chihuahua puppy, now weighing around a pound.

Milly is always accompanied by Ms Eizzil or by her owner, Argentinian Vanessa Semler, who is dedicated to rearing chihuahuas in Puerto Rico.

Ms Semler says caring for Milly takes effort, but explains that she and her husband, Edwin Davila, have no children so they have the time to focus their energies on their pet project.

Delighted owner Vanessa Semler said: 'We have to be certainly careful with Milly because she is too small so she can be easily lost.

'When people see Milly they are really surprised because she is so small but they really love her because she is so lovable.' Milly, who sleeps in a baby's crib, beat previous title-holder Boo Boo, a long-haired female Chihuahua, owned by Lana Elswick of Raceland, Kentucky, who at 4.2inches towers over the new record holder.

Pocket-sized pets remain one of the most fascinating areas of the Guinness World Records database, with tiny dogs arguably the most popular of all our animal records.

Boo Boo, a long-haired, female chihuahua was the former holder of the title of World's Smallest Dog. She measures 10.16cm tall and is owned by Lana Elswick of Raceland, Kentucky

Born in December 2011, she weighs roughly 1 pound (half a kilogram) and is known for often sticking out her tiny tongue when someone takes her picture. 'She knows how to pose,' says Vanesa.

8 Killed in I-40 Bus Crash In East Tennessee

Authorities say a tire on a church bus blew out and the bus hit a tractor-trailer and sport utility vehicle in northeastern Tennessee, killing eight people.

The state Department of Safety and Homeland Security said the chartered bus crossed the median in Jefferson County about 2 p.m. Wednesday on Interstate 40. The bus clipped an oncoming SUV and hit the tractor-trailer, which burst into flames. The bus, which was heading eastbound, overturned. The agency said 14 people were hurt.

The accident has shut down Interstate 40 in Jefferson County. Tennessee Emergency Management Agency spokesman Jeremy Heidt said it was a church bus, did he did not know name.

Several hours after the crash, clouds of smoke still rose from the tractor-trailer and tree branches that lined the highway were charred.

The bus was on its side next to the tractor-trailer, lying across two lanes of traffic and extending moderately into the median. The bus itself didn't essentially catch on fire, but there was some "heat exposure," Jefferson County Emergency Management Director Brad Phillips said. Emergency responders were able to remove people who were alive rapidly to get them away from the flames and other Good Samaritans provided assistance.
